PROINHIBITION (2004)

... WATCH THIS FILM IN MODERATION

The Lost Weekend, The Days Of Wine And Roses, Leaving Las Vegas and now, from the director of Made In Berlin and Vixen Highway comes another shocking expose of the horrors of alcohol and drug abuse, Proinhibition. Set in an unnamed American city in the year 2050, Proinhibition is a stark, but fun, look at a future where booze and dope have saturated the national consciousness and rehabilitation has become a right of passage for almost every American.

It's a boy-meets-girl story for the Addition Age.

Our boy is Dr. Rich S, a recovering alcoholic and founder of the world's premiere chemical dependency center, The Tremens Institute. An involuntary outpatient facility, The Tremens Institute rehabilitates drunks and drug addicts caught overindulging at home or in public by the police's Knights of Sobriety squad.

Once they are hauled into the center, these poor souls are forced to undergo seven days of "barium detox" followed by a year's worth of meetings in one of the facility's 300 treatment groups. Due to the 95% addiction rate among the nation's populace, these groups must now be arranged according to the patients' occupations. The include groups for doctors, lawyers, homemakers, secret service agents ...

... and a new room set up for the most glamorous and sought-after members of society, dominatrons.

Which leads to our girl: Mistress Maggie M, the most popular dominatrix in her district. There is no tongue in the veteran "dom's" cheek as she beats, humiliates and disciplines her high-paying, powerful clients. Alas, her abilities in this area have lost out to her need to get bombed. A recent breakdown in her dungeon has led the Knights of Sobriety to drag her to the only place where she can find hope: The Tremens Institute.

Unbeknownst to this new arrival - not to mention the staff and patients - the center's very founder, Dr. Rich S, has spent the last two years returning to the bottle on an almost non-stop basis. Most of the consumption is from an enormous coffee mug the good doctor carries at all times. Rich, nonetheless, maintains a shockingly professional demeanor, and continues to enjoy the status of a "Prime Example" - a small, powerful clique of recovering addicts who act as perfect examples of sobriety for others.

Combining the psychological tumult of Memento, the futuristic bleakness of Blade Runner and the decadent comedy of Fight Club, Proinhibition exposes the venality of the big-time liquor industry: its determination to hook underaged drinkers and make addicts of older consumers, all in the name of huge profits. At the same time, it pokes fun at the mores and weaknesses of Alcoholics Anonymous, addressing the need for innovation in our world's necessary but far too antiquated rehabilitation programs. John Ervin's Proinhibition is a must-see for those struggling with an addiction. See it with someone you love ... or at the very least with your favorite narcotic or adult beverage!
