MADE IN BERLIN (1998)

IN THIS HOTEL, WHEN YOU CHECK IN

... PRIVACY CHECKS OUT

Michigan Senator Rick Reinhardt (played by real-life Minneapolis Parks Board Commisioner, Tom Nordyke) appears to have it all: a solid career in Democratic politics, the support of the cream of the liberal elite, and the attentions of many beautiful women. This includes Ilsa (Shyla Weaver), the mysterious, mini-skirted femme fatale he meets at a fundraiser in the city of Minneapolis, and with whom he has arranged a tryst in his suite at that city's most exclusive two-star hotel, the Adlon Budget Inn.

Things get weird - very weird - when Ilsa arrives. As she and her host enjoy the hotel's house wine, she begins dropping hints that she may not be the ambitious political activist she claims to be. She, in fact, comes across as nothing less than a mini-skirted version of Satan, coming to punish ... or reward ... the senator for cheating on his wife, Olga, who remains behind in Michigan.

As Rick simultaneously rejects and succumbs to the advances of the repulsive yet seductive Ilsa, he gets the feeling he is being watched by the mustachioed desk clerk, Gordy (Michael Metzdorff, featured as the Steiglitz Photo Buyer in the biopic Georgia O'Keeffe). This is not an idle concern, as the seemingly friendly Gordy repeatedly breaks his amiable demeanor to rant to foxy room service steward, Lotte (played by Dawn Akemi, star of Dungeons and Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God), about the "typical liberal scum" and the "whore" he is "fornicating" with up in his room.

There is also strong evidence that Gordy may belong to the Michigan clean-freak cult, Up With Purity, whose long-dead leader, Otto Haarman, was a religious zealot determined to end the Senator's career. Meanwhile, Rick and Ilsa are the subject of speculation by Lotte, herself, as well as their neighbors, trailer trash couple Greta and Carl (Sarah Phemister and Scott Wacha), and blind guest, Emil (Jay Blake). Before the night is over, there is intrigue, betrayal, murder ... and a tango!

Made in Berlin is a modern-American tribute to the "Weimar period" of 1920’s Germany, the era of experimentation in art, politics and culture, whose center was the city of Berlin. Cast in the stark tones of F. W. Murnau, Fritz Lang, Joseph Von Sternberg and other filmmakers of that period, this feature also reflects the turbulent times we currently live in. With Gordy, Otto Haarman and Up With Purity a few rants away from being Ted Haggard, James Dobson and Focus on the Family, Made in Berlin is a warning about what can happen when power is put in the hands of those who wish to end the separation between church and state, and who seek to control the private lives of the American public.

Of course, in real life, that's already happened!
